GUEST SPEAKER
Ross Boadle is
Senior Scientist in Electron Microscopy at the Institute of
Clinical Pathology at Westmead Hospital.
Ross announced
that seeing that it was a dinner meeting he thought it wise not to
bring “samples”. Ross explained the procedure of reducing
tissue specimens so that they can be seen under the Electron
Microscope for research work.
The cost of the
microscopes can be in excess on $2 million. Specimens have to be
frozen so that very thin slices can be removed. This leads to the
risk of frost bite in the fingers. Ross had samples of “things”
(didn’t get told what they were) on slides so we could see close
at hand the way they were magnified. All the members obviously
found the talk very interesting and there were many question asked
of Ross after his talk.
Lou thanked Ross on
behalf of the club for a very informative but brief look at the
world of cells and tissues through a microscope.
